Production Week 10 - UNITS 14 & 16

Evaluation - UNITS 14 & 16

Production Journey - UNITS 14 & 16

Starting my production journey i made sure i knew how to use the software and equipment for my radio show. In oder for me to be familiar with what i am using i had to start of with GarageBand understanding how to use the microphone to record the sound. I also had to understand how to use my phone to record sounds with no background noise. In the process of me using GarageBand i saw i could use the software to record different types of sounds however i used voice. This made my                                                                                                audio clear.

I made sure to record some sounds my self for my production journey the reason to this was it sounds more natural and it blends in with voice audio more. Due to me recording the sound on my phone is was easier to take it to the different places i wanted sounds from.

To make sure i stuck to my pre-production material i had in hand to use i simply asked my teacher if i can print it out. This allowed me to follow everything i said in my pre production planning this also made it easier for me to not be carrying around my laptop to see what i need to do that i said i would do in my pre production.

After i received my feedback from my focus group i had to go back and make some changes my focus group had given to me such as recording my car sound again. They had also mentioned that some of my audio recording was bubbly because of the mic being to close to the mouth and needed to be covered with something. However i was able to make these changes by simply going outside and recording car noises in my free time. I was also able to record my audio again in my spare time like lunch and break. Due to me not being able to take school equipment like the sonny mic because other students would need it on the following Monday and there was a possibly i could of been sick and wouldn't be in school so i used my phone to record these sounds. This also allowed me to meet the teachers deadline.

When i made my final edit with all the feedback i wanted to make sure my work was good and meets the public expectations. This is why i took all the audience feedback and made sure i made these changes to my final edit so i decided to cut some audio clips short and extend some. This made my overall final edit better.

When i used sound of youtube i used this youtube to mp3 converter to use the sound and add it onto final cut pro. This allowed my sound to be better quality and clear.

Finally when everything was done i was able to save it into the right format and upload it to youtube.

I created my very own background image to use and add it onto final cut pro so that audience know what my radio is called and what is being spoken about. This allows the audience to know what the hot topic is about.

Final edit - UNITS 14 & 16

Audio assets - UNITS 14 & 16

Sound formats - UNITS 14 & 16

Sound formats

When audio is recorded there are different types of file formats that are being stored in the computer. This is because all the sound formats are used for different purposes. These types of formats can be used for web distribution to a playlist for music and production. The different examples for this are:

  • WAV
WAV stands for Waveform Audio. You can use any audio bitstream can be stored on your computer using this audio format. Using WAV audio files allows the file to be identical to the original audio due to the audio being lossless. This can be changed to create various files, including MP3 and AIFF. However one of the major drawbacks is the large memory capacity.

  • AIFF
AIFF audio was created by apple. AIFF format is also lossless. AIFF is very alike to WAV format. AIFF has very high sound quality. The drawback for this audio is how much storage it takes up in the system.

  • MP3
MP3 allows us to compress the files and the download it with the right format. MP3 is mostly a lossy format. This allows there to be more space and is accessible with a bunch of different devices. One drawback using MP3 is the sound quality that reduces significantly

  • WMA
Windows Media Audio in short is WMA. WMA is used as a audio file container and can also be used as a audio codec. The advantage of using WMA is having a secure audio file format. This takes up less storage on the device. One of the drawbacks is this format can only be used by Windows.

Storage

When audio files are stored they can be saved to digital drives and hard drives. You should always make sure to save and back up the file incase it gets lost or deleted. When you are saving the files its crucial to save them all to one folder. The drives that you can save your files are:

  • Flash drive/USB
A flash drive/USB is a small device that is in the device that stores files and data in it. The advantages of using flash drive it can be carried anywhere. One drawback i the storage it does not have enough storage.

  • Hard drive
Hard drives are not the same as a flash drive/USB. Even though they serve the same purpose of storing files and data these hard drives come built into the computer from the start. This means all your data on one hard drive can only be seen on the same device. However hard drive still have more storage.

  • Cloud backup services
A cloud drive is a service which is based online. A advantage of using cloud drive is it can be used and accessed anywhere. This is very coinvent beacuse it can accessed from anywhere. One drawback is it requires internet.

  • Compression
Compression is when the sound is reduced that is above a certain level. There are different  compressions such as:
  • DRC
Dynamic Range compression in short is DRC. This is when the volume of loud sounds is lowered down. And the sounds are quitter are increased.
  • Downward compression
When downward compression occurs when you need to reduce loud sounds from a certain level.
  • Upward compression
However upward compression helps increase the quitter sounds.

Size versus quality
  • Lossy - is when the quality of the sound is reduced.
  • Lossless - This is when the file is being compressed and the data still remains there.
  • Bit rates - Is how much data is processed in the second.
  • File size - This allows you to see hoe big the file is on the device.

Considerations - UNITS 14 & 16

To put all my files together i will use the school iMacs. Furthermore when i am exporting this i will use AIFF sound format. The reason i will use this format is because apple has ownership of this format. It also comes with the feature lossless. This allows the original audio to be copied.

Looking the sound file sand where i am going to be keeping them will be my cloud account on the iMac.  Wen-based is the cloud drive remote server. This allows me to open the file from anywhere with internet. This is because the account will have desktop folders which allows me to access the files.

Lastly i will make use of compression. This process allows me to make sure the other sounds are more quitter this also makes sure that the other sounds can be heard in my edits. This will allow different sounds to be heard in my radio show.

Funding - UNITS 14 & 16

Funding can be done in many different ways the reason it can be done in many different ways is because it can come from different sources. For instance:

  • Grants
Grants is when the government or local council have loo at you project to see if they should provide you with the money to fund it. This is useful because you don't have to pay back the money to the government.  This is mostly beneficial for companies.

  • Advertising
This is when you send a message to pope to communicate to help them fund your project. ASA is in charge of all adverts. ASA look into the idea when it being advertised this is due to the project being shown to social media.

  • Sponsorship
A sponsorship comes from grant and advertising. A sponsorship occurs when the company agrees to pay or helps promote their company. This allows both business to work in favours as one funds the company the other promotes the company.

When looking at the use of funding for my idea I would use advertising for this. This is due to TikTok having a big platform and everyone uses it. Using this platform will help me fund my radio show. Having the help of TikTok will allow me to get more audience for my radio show.

Feedback Analysis - UNITS 14 & 16

I have conducted a focus group which has helped me find a guide on what to do, change, edit and adjust for my final edit.

Mr Magardo had asked me why we were on a road. This had automatically told me it would be hard to understand from the audience's perspective. He then stated that it makes my radio edit sound less professional as the audio of the sound editing of having a crowded background is sort of too overpowering. He advised me to record it clean, meaning to record it with no sound in the background and export the sound effect of a crowded place so that the audio is clearer. He then stated that i should re-record on the microphone using the same tactic meriyem did as she had covered the microphone when recording so there were no harsh pronunciations like Ps and Bs over powering on the mic.

Zara had stated she likes my radio idea as it is understandable with the sound effects of the cars which makes it recognisable to the public that the characters are outside. She also stated that she thinks i should add more audio to make it three minutes.

Mr Magardo then talks about the fact that it starts with a character sort of norating but in a studio as it is quiet and professional and then shifts to loud and abrupt sounds that aren't swiftly laid out. Heathen also stated that he believes i cut the ending too soon as it sounded as if the narrator's voice was cut off and then there was just a black screen.

Questions i asked:

What do you think my strengths are?
  • They said good script
What is one thing you didn't like at all?
  • The audio needs to be leveled out

Launch date - UNITS 14 & 16

My launch date for my radio programme will be in the summer time this is because kids will most likely be using their phone and preparing them self's for school and would want to know how things might be this experience will be overwhelming for them. Having phones will also allow them to communicate with their parents when they are in school. These kids can also find people on social media that will go to the same school as them this will allow them to find people that go the same school and have some sort of friends when they go to school.

Due to both adults and children  typically being on vacation, launching the program during the summer can be highly successful. Moreover, the adults will be more experienced about social media and able to supervise how their adult children use it. The kids will be more equipped to comprehend social media and be aware of both the advantages and disadvantages of using social media and this will allow them to have a better understanding of the pros and cons of social media.

Scheduling and alignment to programme genre - UNITS 14 & 16

When looking at when i want to schedule my radio show. Here are some things that i will consider for instance when is the most appropriate time for adults and children to actually listen to my radio. I have considered the summer time because summer time is approaching meaning parents will stress and look into their kids going to secondary and think about how social media will play apart in their life in school. This time period will allow me to have more audience for my radio show.

Lastly, my radio program will be based on two girls helping a girl out for getting bullied because she posts on social media. This allows me to get different target audience because kids will relate to bullying and posting on social media.

Regulatory Bodies: Ofcom - UNIT 14

 Ofcom:

Regulator for the communications services

The regulatory body  we depend on on a daily basis is called Ofcom. In oder to monitor TV and radio, we make sure costumers receive the most out of their mobile, home phone, and broadband services. The broadcasting code is divided into ten sections that are interconnected and provide programmers with more guidance on the code.

Section 1:Protecting the under eighteens

  • Ofcom looks out for the public's safeguarding, and in this part, it focuses on protecting children under the age of 18. This enables kids to develop in a orderly manor while still respecting and keeping their innocence. It is important that I review these guidelines and standards while I make the final edit of the radio podcast. My writing must be PG-rated.
  • Section 2:Harm and offence
  • Keeping the standards of the radio project requires avoiding  anything that can potentially offend or injure the listener, such as offensive material. It's really  important to choose your words wisely while discussing social media-related subjects in order to avoid offending someone.

  • Section 3:Crime, disorder, hatred and abuse
  • Making sure that no server crime is being used in the radio, disorder, hostility, and abuse is discussed in this section. It draws attention to  no criminal activity or disturbance should be taking place by the content, either directly or indirectly.  For my radio project, I have to make sure that my content doesn't promote any actions that the listeners might take in the wrong way and feel offended.

  • Section 4:Religion
  • This section is important , in the views of practically everyone, religion is a big factor, and nobody wants to see or hear anything that is offensive to their religion or culture. For the safety and enjoyment of the public, Ofcom has laws and regulations that prevent these problems from occurring. I will make sure not to bring up topics related to gender, racism, or religion. Therefore won't have to worry about this particular section.

  • Section 10Commercial communications on radio
  • This section is only applies for radio broadcasts. I makes sure that businesses communicate correctly to protect clients needs and wants. This is crucial because Ofcom cares about the safety of every consumer. Since I know that people will want to watch and listen for enjoyment  to information, I need to know this so that my radio program can be coinvent for everyone so that no one feels offended and feels
  • differently than i would want them to.
